They found a small area of shade behind an outcrop of rock where a sand dune had formed around an overhanging rock. Saldon pulled a wineskin from his side and drank the liquor inside. It was refreshing and cool to the taste.

“I don’t know what this is, but it is very good for your thirst.” Saldon admitted.

“It’s cold, weak mint tea, I believe.” Manna answered.

“It’s very good and quite filling.”

“The filling part was probably the ox that you ate for breakfast.” Manna laughed.

Halon smiled. He was only half listening and was worrying about Illeander. When he had suggested that they head directly across the Banter Mountains, Manna did not object. Although he considered himself the leader, he bowed to Manna’s more localised knowledge. The Banter Mountains were really just hills, but against the stark contrast of the desert, they seemed to loom up in homage to Illeander in the far distance, yet again obscured by heat haze. What did the king mean by the words ‘Korrich ranhynn tohyrm Madra ayz’? They were going to Illeander, a place where no one had been before and there were no maps or other layout guides, not even hearsay. Were they just to walk up to the gates and ask for the Amber Globe to be handed over? How would they gain access? How many guards were there? What monsters and demons would they face? How big was the globe? What size was the serpent that held the globe? Was it just a serpent’s head? Was it a full size statue perhaps tens of cubits high? Was there a plinth on which it stood? Was the storyteller in Baram trustworthy and accurate? What did the writing inscribed on the strange sword mean? Was it the same as on Anduin’s sword? Was Anduin telling them the whole truth and all that he knew? Why did the Illeander guard slay his wife? How did he get that far? If Cruzel attacked Illeander so soon, what if they were there when it happened? Halon’s mind swam with uncertainty so much it hurt. He shook his head and noticed that his best friend and Manna had dozed off in the intense heat.
